Cellular jail, port blair
Port Blair Cellular jail, built in 1896, is popularly known as Kalapani. It has a significant place in the Indian freedom struggle as this was the very place where numerous freedom fighters were imprisoned and treated miserably. The inhuman conditions of the inmates came to the knowledge of public only after the famous hunger strike conducted by the freedom fighters imprisoned in the cellular jail. Some of the famous inmates of the cellular jail were Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Dr. Diwan Singh Kalepani, Yogendra Shukla, Bhai Parmanand, and Maulana Ahmadullah.
During the World War II, the island came under the control of the Japanese army, but was regained by the British after the war ended. Over the time, after India got her freedom, Kalapani became a famous tourist destination in Port Blair.

Cellular Jail is located in the city of Port Blair, which is the capital of the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a group of about 300 islands in the Bay of Bengal. Port Blair is accessible by air from important Indian cities. Travelers can also reach Port Blair by sea from various ports like Chennai, Calcutta and Vishakhapatnam. This monument is located in the northern part of the city and travelers can reach it by bus, auto-rickshaw or taxi. They can also take mopeds, scooters, or motorcycles on rent to visit this monument.
